Memoirs in a Song...

Stories, Stones and Bones is a name given to me in a dream some 10+ years ago. I used the title for my first book of lyrics when I sent it to be copywritten... This blog is a compendium of my book of lyrics, from 1996 to present.

The name holds a sense of ancient wisdom, which I hope begins to seep thru my songs: What are the stories the earth tells, that are written on our ancestral bones? What is the deeper pool of knowledge that we can drink from as we birth ourselves into creative evolutionary beings? Where are our roots? What is the journey we have taken, personally and collectively?...

And so begins the story, woven in song, as fallen through the lyrics of my music...

More lyrics will be coming soon (I've written well over 100 songs!)... In the meantime, I hope you enjoy!

[Please note that you will want to read from bottom to top (in reverse). The "archive by date" list on the lefthand side will help your journey - which begins in March of 1996, when the first song flew out of my lips... You can also search by THEMES: the songs which I like a lot or are in current performance rotation are in the theme of *favorites*]

Lift Me Up

Not sure what to say about this one... It came at a time when I was (and perhaps still am!) deeply poised between dark and light, between shadow past and mystic potential. Striving for the light...

Lift me up on the angels wings
Lift me up to the sky
Take me where the angels sing
I wanna fly

And I promise my love
And I promise my light
And I wanna fly
Through the sky
Through the night
Into the light

Verse 2:
Lift me up on the angels wings
Take me away from here
I'm dying on these city streets
This devil's field of fear

And I haven't the grace
And I wish I could change
But oh, you gotta show me the way
Through this blood of fire
Through the shadows in my mind
Into the light

Bridge:
Oh the angels have descended
The angels have descended to earth
The angels have descended
The angels have descended to earth

Angels all around me
Angels are within me
Angels are our spirits flying free

Angels all around you
Angels are within you
Angels are our spirits shining through

Verse 3 (1/2 verse):
And I wanna see you fly
Through the brilliant sky
Through the dark black night
Into the light

Outro:
Do you remember who you are?
You are a child of the stars
Do you remember...

You are the light

Sometimes

Mmm, a song from the true heart of winter...

Sometimes I feel like a crazy old woman
Sometimes I feel like the walking dead
Sometimes I feel like there’s a ghost in the shadows
Sometimes I feel. . . holy ghost in my head

And the night is so cold
And the air is grown thin
I can feel it in my bones
I can feel it under my skin

Sometimes I feel like a mean old woman
Sometimes I feel like a scared little girl
Sometimes I feel, where’s the hope for tomorrow
Sometimes I feel. . . maybe in another world

And the night is so cold
And the air is grown thin
I can feel it in my bones
I can feel it under my skin

Sometimes I feel like a wise old woman
Sometimes I feel like an innocent child
Sometimes I feel like running off with the circus
Sometimes I feel. . . like running naked and wild

And the night is so long
There’s no measure to its length
But I know it makes me strong
Yes I know it gives me strength

Into the Void

Still one of my favorite songs of all time. We never know when some bit of epic poetry or divine melody might come through us. This one came when I was only a year and a half old, as a musician. It is still in my current performance repertoire.

When the lady’s dance is done
And the last song is sung
In a time when mists abide
Inner space where dreams collide

Into the void I travel
Into the shadows I fall
Into the silent thunder
Into nothing... and all

Golden Spirit

I wrote this while driving up a gorgeous mountain pass in western colorado on the way to see a sweet love of mine... Ironically, he didn't have golden hair like in the song. But there's an archetypal quality to it that still rings true as I sing it to this day...

When I woke this early morn
Sunlight shone upon your face
Lit the golden hairs of wisdom
That doth give you so much grace

Hara Rama
Hara Ram
Hara Rama
Hara Hara Ram

When I look into your eyes
Golden spirit shines so bright
And when I look within your soul
I feel ancient wisdom of days of old

Hara Rama...

Sweetwater

Heh heh, this one has a funny story... ;-)

I was driving back to Boulder, after my first Burning Man. Up ahead I saw a semi-truck that said "Sweetwater." I thought, "that would be a great name for a song!" So I started singing, "sweetwater runs ___ over the earth...." But I couldn't find that third word! Then only a few miles down the road, I passed another semi, this one a "Swift" truck - and the song was born!

To this day, it still gets sung in circles. There's mighty power in this affirmation of the healthful grace of our beautiful waters!

Sweetwater runs swiftly over the earth
Rivers run free (wild) as the ocean gives birth (x2)

Sweetwater yeah, yeah sweetwater (x2)

Sweetwater runs swiftly down from the sky
It quenches my soil when I’m feeling dry (x2)

Sweetwater yeah, yeah sweetwater (x2)

There’s a power within us
There’s a power in the universe
It is a power that heals
It is a power that gives rebirth

Sweetwater yeah, yeah sweetwater (x2)

Sweetwater runs swiftly under my skin
My blood is pure and without sin (x2)

(REFRAIN, CHORUS, REFRAIN. . .)

Woman in the Wind

I began this one up in those high alpine meadows with my father that June, and finished it that August at my mama's home in Oregon. It's a nice one to sing while walking - reminding oneself of the joy in simple things...

There’s a woman walking on the wind
There’s a woman walking on the wind
There’s a woman walking on the wind

I like walking in the wind
Freedom spirit fills me within
I like walking in the wind

I like, I like walking
I like, I like walking

I like walking in a song
Whistle a tune as I ramble along
I like walking in a song

I like, I like walking
I like, I like walking

I like walking in the rain
Washes my soul, lets me start again
I like walking in the rain

I like, I like walking
I like, I like walking

I like walking in the woods
Earth beneath my feet, feels so good
I like walking in the woods

I like, I like walking
I like, I like walking

I like walking by the sea
La da da di, I feel so free
I like walking by the sea

I like, I like walking
I like, I like walking

I like walking alone
Sweet anticipation of the unknown
I like walking alone

I like, I like walking
I like, I like walking

I like walking hand in hand
Together with love we can heal this land
I like walking hand in hand

I like, I like walking
I like, I like walking

I like walking in a prayer
Knowing Great Spirit will take us there
I like walking in a prayer

I like, I like walking
I like, I like walking

I like walking in the stars
On this neverending journey we travel so far
I like walking in the stars

I like, I like walking
I like, I like walking

There’s a woman walking on the wind
There’s a woman dancing on the wind
There’s a woman laughing on the wind
There’s a woman weaving the wind

Listen

A spirited and soulful reminder. Born of the campfire inspirational songs from the "Rainbow" Gathering - the colorful world of hippy love love that I discovered much joy within...

Listen what your mama sayin’
Listen what your mama say, yeah yeah yeah
Can you hear her prayin’?
Listen what your mama say
She know the way

Listen to your sister speakin’
Listen to your sister’s story, yeah yeah yeah
In all her glory
Let her share the secrets she keep
Let her speak

Listen to your brotherheart, yeah
Listen to your brotherheart beating, yeah yeah yeah
Gotta keep believing
Listen to your brotherheart
Make a brand new start

Listen what your body tell you
Listen what your body feel, yeah yeah yeah
Let it heal you
Listen what your body know
Let it flow

Listen to your intuition
Let go of your inhibitions, yeah
Trust your vision
Listen to your first instinct
Don’t stop to think

Listen to your spiritsong, yeah
Listen to your spiritsong singin’, yeah yeah yeah
It knows everything
Listen to your spiritsong
And sing along

Do You Believe?

Continuing on that theme begun in "Divine Intervention" - this one invites us to look even more deeply into the magic of the universe, to believe in the inherent freedom and interconnectedness of this web of earthly life...

Do you believe in magic?
Do you believe we are free?
Do you believe there is a way
that I can be in you and you can be in me?
Do you believe in magic?
Do you believe in me?
Do you believe in infinity?
An endless world of possibility!

Refrain:
I’m in you and you’re in me
and we’re both in all we see
I’m in you and you’re in me
Gotta believe we are free

In the fire and in the air
In the dream of the eagle and bear
In the wind blowin’ through the trees
In the mountains and the deep blue seas

In the song of a nightingale
In the story of the dolphin and whale
In the flight of a dragonfly
In the calm of a clear blue sky

In the free flow of a cloud
In the mystery behind the shroud
In the birth and in the death
In the in and out of every breath

Divine Intervention

A quick little ditty. Wrote while spending a full-moon evening out with some trippy friends at the community gardens. My most favorite part of the eve was the way the moonlight shone through an iris - transparent sparkly lavender moonlight...

The main message in this song to me was that through the healing and spiritual path I was on, I was actually stepping into a new dimension of living on this earth - what used to seem important no longer was, and I could live this new, earthy way, which felt more true to my long-locked spirit...

Open your eyes
Pay attention
We’re livin’ in
A new dimension

Open your mind
See the sign
Divine Intervention

The Circle

My first "odd-rhythm" song! Little did I know when I wrote it... Though it all fits over a 3, it would be more apt to say it's a 3-3-5-7-3-3-3 ~ all told that would be a 27 rhythm!

I wrote this while traipsing thru the high mountain forests with my papa, the psychedelic shaman. Laying on a rock in the middle of the river, with the water wrapping its way around - watching the clouds overhead, the circle of water in this web of life...

Sweet Sister

It might be surmised by the "...gonna kiss ya" line that this is a romantic song. Be assured that though that's a sweet thought, I don't personally have that 'thing' for women. This song honors all the beautiful ways that women connect. For me, this song is simply an honoring of womenfriends - though we've culturally often been kept apart by competition or fear, there can be such sweetness and support when we open to love one another...

Sweet sister, how I missed you
Sweet sister, one of these days I’m gonna kiss ya
Oh sister, mmhmm

So much love inside
All these years I hide
Afraid to look you in the eyes
Oh sister...

(Chorus)

It’s been so long
We gotta be strong
Gotta keep on singin’ our song
Oh sister...

(Chorus)

I’m a woman, I’m a little girl
I’m a crone and a mother
I could be your lover
Sweet as any other
I will be your friend
Holdin’ your hand

Dreamtime

A longtime dreamer... At this time, and for several years previous, I had been working deeply with dreams. Every morning I would write down any I could remember in my bedside dream journal. My papa, a longtime dream shaman, led weekly dreamwork groups - every Wednesday evening we would sit in circle and share - reflecting to one another possible interpretations, helping to uncover our personal interpretations of our dreams' symbolism, finding out how the dreams felt, doing "Gestalt" practice on the dreams... Sometimes we would draw our dreams, sometimes use active-imagination to continue the dreams that seemed to have no resolution...

I found significant power in dreaming - these are our inner teachers coming to us every night to reflect upon our lives and to draw the hidden from the shadows. By listening, we uncover and free our deepest fears, we see through our habitual human patterns, and we unleash our inspired potential...

In honor of the dreaming, I sang:

In a dream sent to remember
In a dream sent to remind
In a dream we turn back veils
In a dream we turn back time
In a dream we turn our bodies
In a dream we turn our minds
And as we keep on turning
We steadily unwind

Going into dreamtime
Wonder what we will find
Going into dreamtime
Searching for a sign
Going down to dreamworld
Drinking of its wine

In a dream sent to inspire
In a dream sent to divine
In a dream we see the future
In a dream we see past time
In a dream we see past limits
We reach beyond that line
And with each new vision
No longer are we blind

Going into dreamtime
Wonder what we will find
Going into dreamtime
Searching for a sign
Going down to dreamworld
Drinking of its wine

Like a serpentine, weaving it’s way through your mind...

Surrender

It was bound to happen eventually - a lovesong...

I don’t know what you’ll say,
but I’m gonna tell you anyway
I don’t know what you’ll do,
that’s okay cuz I will still love you
I don’t know how you feel,
all I know is my love is real
I don’t know what’s at stake,
all I know is I got what it takes
I don’t know, but I sure care,
every morning I say a prayer

Surrender yourself my sweet, sweet boy
And I’ll give unto you my sweet, sweet joy
Oo yeah surrender...oh yeah surrender oh love

Why don’t you come on, come on, come on come on in
Wherever you’re going, no matter where you’ve been
Come on over, come on out
Let’s find out what this is all about
Come on over, come on in
Jump in the water, let's go for a swim
Come on over, come on out
Love’s a feeling we can’t live without
Come on over, come on in
Dive in my heart, climb under my skin

Surrender yourself my sweet, sweet boy
And I’ll give unto you my sweet, sweet joy
Oo yeah surrender...oh yeah surrender oh love

You are welcome, welcome, welcome to this land
Don’t be shy, come and take my hand
Welcome, welcome, welcome to my heart
When we’re together I don’t ever wanna part
Welcome, welcome, welcome to my soul
Just let go, why don’t we lose control
Welcome, welcome, welcome to my love
Let it wrap around, envelop like a glove
Welcome, welcome, welcome to my world
I’ll open my shell, you can have my pearl

Surrender yourself my sweet, sweet boy
And I’ll give unto you my sweet, sweet joy
Oo yeah surrender...oh yeah surrender oh love

Revolution

Following in what seemed to be the theme of the year - upbeat and funky and inspirational... Though I never really performed any of these pieces, they were good medicine for my soul...

For awhile I thought these little ditties would be perfect mixed with some good house or techno music. From 1992-1996ish I was deep in the rave scene - all night shamanic techno dance. It only seemed natural. That was the venue where the dance poured through me, and I attribute it also to helping free the energy that eventually unleashed my voice. Little did I know, the hippi world was about to absorb me into its more earthy vibe...

Revolution!
Talkin’ bout a revolution

I ain’t talkin’ bout no guns
I ain’t talkin’ bout no fightin’
I ain’t talkin’ bout no war
(Had enough of brothers dyin’
Had enough of sisters cryin’)

Talkin’ bout a revolution
Talkin’ bout an evolution of the mind

Ain’t no use talkin’ bout it sister
What ya doin’? What ya thinkin’?
Ain’t no use talkin’ bout it brother
Whatcha givin’? Whatcha takin’?

Talkin’ bout, whatcha doin’ talkin’ bout. . .

Mother Earth

My love for the mother runs deep and long. I feel for all the ways we unconsciously abuse her in the name of 'progress' and capitalism... I love her sweet bounty, her tender rains, her epic beauty...

Oh mother, Mother Earth
My world, my home
Upon your body we do roam
Oh mother, Mother Earth...

My body, my soul
My joy, my pain
You make it rain
Oh mother...

I’m your daughter and your friend
I don’t want to see you end
Oh mother, Mother Earth
Won’t you show us where you’ve been hurt
Oh mother, Mother Earth

Sowing the Seeds

Ahh, the simple truths, coming thru a newly-awakened youth...

They talk of devastation, of war and poverty
But I don’t hear them talkin’ of peace and sovereignty
Why can’t we see just how simple it is
To live with mother nature, the take and the give

Chorus:
Just remember. . . that what you sow is what you will grow (x2)
I’m sowing the seeds of a new world (x4)

They talk of desolation, of fear and loneliness
But I don’t hear them talkin’ of love and holiness
Why in the world do we pretend it’s so hard
To love one another, unconditional regard

Chorus:
Just remember. . . that what you sow is what you will grow (x2)
I’m sowing the seeds of a new world (x4)

You are a Star

Another really cute one. About the power of Spirit to inspire from within...

Ain’t nobody told me who to be
Ain’t nobody taught me how to see
No matter what they said
It didn’t make no difference till I changed my head
Cuz you gotta be open to the words that are spoken
How can I teach you if I cannot reach you

You’ve got to teach yourself
Gotta reach deep inside of yourself
You are a star
Find your own power and you will go far
You are a star
Let your light shine and you will go far
You are a star
Up high in the sky,
you will go higher
and higher
and higher
Filled with the fire

Master Sleuth

Heh heh, this one's funny and cute - an expression of the hip-hopper optimistic chica in me... It's also an expression of my understanding of the power of lyrics to bring a new truth to the world. Very cute.

This is what I have to do
This is what I want to do
This is what I’ve got to do
This is where I’m goin’ to

Cuz I’m a master sleuth
I’ve got to tell the truth
Yeah I can see right through
This phony ballyhoo

It’s got to be me
And it’s got to be you
Together with love
We can see this thing through

Cuz we’re all master sleuths...
